Plane Old Travel

So a little bit of a pat on the back to myself for the headline for this story.  It’s encompasses the three main themes for the day. Genius!

So with a quiet Sunday and nothing to do I decided to go for a drive from Sydney down the Wollongong.  I have always wanted to visit the HARS Museum at Albion Park but never got around to it.  As luck would have it today was one of their open days (2nd Friday of every month and the Sat/Sun following).  This gives you the opportunity to walk around the planes by yourself.  The museum is open every day with guided tours.

After turning off onto Airport Road and turning a few bends you are greeted with the huge tail section of the amazing Boeing 747-400 donated by Qantas earlier this year.  Whatever you’ve seen looking out the window at the airport, it has nothing on driving beneath this behemoth of a tail.

2015-08-16 17.45.41Entry to HARS is cheap, only $15 to spend a few hours walking through the history books.

Without going into too much detail they have some amazing planes on show.  My all time favorites have to be the Super Constellation (known at Connie) and of course the 747.

It is amazing talking with the volunteers on site, many have been involved with these planes throughout their lives as pilots, engineers and much more.  You can hear them reliving every moment in every story they tell.

For anyone else keen on planes, this trip is definitely worth it.  It’s only a couple of short hours drive out of Sydney and entry to affordable.

More details can be found on HARS website over at www.hars.org.au

Just to add to the road trip element, after leaving the museum I headed south venturing down as far as Sanctuary Point (about 25 minutes south of Nowra) to drop in and visit some old friends.  All in all a great day of driving and sight seeing.

Here’s some photos I took on the day.  More details of the planes can be found on HARS website above.
